New MUCC First XI Manager and Murchison local, Adrian Johnson, was proud to take the 2nd XI back to his hometown for a practice match against the Monash Tigers.
Back in Uni colours after a year on the sidelines, Jarrod Martignago led the team into the field, as lively opening spells from Umair Butt and recruit Daniel Van Der Merwe saw the Tigers 4 down before too long. With the pitch providing some turn, John Mclaughlan took full advantage, deceiving batsmen on his way to a well-deserved four wickets. A fight back from the Tigers saw them post a respectable 150, after Uni dominated for much of the first innings.
With the bat, openers Harrison Emms and Ben Roughsedge got MUCC off to a superb start, getting ahead of the run rate from the outset. They were followed by the partnership of the day between skipper Martignago and Nuwan Kavinda, who looked to target the short boundary, on their way to scores of 67 and 78* respectively.
The match finished in a comprehensive victory for the MUCC 2nd XI, and they will be looking to carry this form into round one against Camberwell on October 7.
